Why Is My Thermador Ice Maker Not Making Ice?

thermador-blog-ice-maker

You reach for ice and the bin is empty. Again. Everything else in the fridge is working — food’s cold, lights are on, nothing is beeping. Just no ice.

Before you call anyone, work through the list below. A good half of the “broken” Thermador ice makers we get called out to aren’t broken at all — they’re switched off, waiting, or thirsty.

Did anything change recently? Start there

Ice makers rarely quit for no reason. Nine times out of ten, something happened first:

  • The fridge was just installed or just moved.
  • Someone changed the water filter.
  • The water was shut off for a plumbing job.
  • Someone was digging around in the freezer and knocked something.

If any of those ring a bell, the cause is probably sitting in that sentence.

1. Is it actually turned on?

Sounds insulting. It isn’t. This is genuinely one of the most common causes.

Most Thermador ice makers have a wire arm on the side. Arm up = off. Arm down = on. That arm is how the ice maker senses the bin is full — and it’s very easy to bump it upward while pulling out a bag of peas.

On models with a control panel, check that ice making hasn’t been switched off in the menu. It happens more often than anyone admits.

2. Have you actually waited long enough?

This one frustrates people, and it’s worth knowing: a freshly installed or freshly restarted Thermador ice maker needs about 24 hours to produce its first proper batch — and up to 72 hours to hit full output.

If you just plugged the fridge in yesterday and there’s no ice, nothing is wrong. It’s still cooling down. Give it another day before you start worrying.

3. The water filter — the quiet culprit

A clogged filter chokes the water going to the ice maker. You’ll often notice the symptoms in this order: ice cubes get smaller → they get hollow or misshapen → they stop coming altogether.

Thermador recommends changing the water filter every six months. If you can’t remember the last time you did, that’s your answer. And if you just changed it — make sure it’s seated all the way and locked, because a filter that isn’t fully home blocks the flow just as effectively as a dirty one.

4. Is the freezer cold enough?

An ice maker can’t freeze water in a freezer that isn’t properly cold. Thermador recommends around 0 °F. Once the freezer creeps up past roughly 10 °F, ice production slows down or stops.

Check the setting. Then check reality — a freezer that’s set to 0 °F but full of soft ice cream has a different problem, and the ice maker is just the messenger. If that’s you, the issue is the fridge itself, not the ice maker.

5. Is there an ice cube jammed in the works?

A single cube wedged against the sensing arm will convince the ice maker that the bin is full, and it’ll politely stop making more.

Pull out the ice bin, empty it, and look for a stray cube stuck where it shouldn’t be. Free it with something blunt and plastic — never a knife or a screwdriver. Then slide the bin back in until it’s properly seated.

6. Is water even reaching it?

If the dispenser gives you water normally, the supply line is fine and you can skip this. If water comes out slowly, or not at all, the problem is upstream — a closed shutoff valve, a kinked line, low pressure, or a failed inlet valve.

Check that the shutoff valve behind the fridge is fully open. If it is, and water still won’t come, stop. The inlet valve is an electrical component sitting next to a water line, and testing it needs a meter and someone who knows which is which.

When it’s time to stop and call

  • You’ve been through everything above and there’s still no ice after 48 hours.
  • There’s water pooling in or under the freezer — that’s a leak, and leaks don’t wait.
  • The ice maker makes noise but no ice — it’s trying, and something mechanical is stopping it.
  • Ice tastes or smells wrong even with a fresh filter.

At that point you’re usually looking at the icemaker module, the water inlet valve, or the control board — and guessing between those three by swapping parts gets expensive fast.

Questions people ask us

Why are my ice cubes tiny and hollow?

Almost always water flow. Clogged filter, partly closed valve, or low pressure — the mold isn’t filling all the way before it freezes. Start with the filter.

The ice smells like the freezer. Is the ice maker broken?

No — ice absorbs odors. Old ice sitting in the bin for weeks picks up whatever else is in there. Dump the bin, replace the filter if it’s due, and see if fresh ice tastes clean.

Can I just reset it?

You can try one clean power cycle — unplug the fridge, wait a few minutes, plug it back in. What you shouldn’t do is reset it over and over hoping it takes. If one reset doesn’t fix it, the reset isn’t the fix.

Everything else in the fridge works fine. Doesn’t that mean it’s just the ice maker?

Usually, but not always. The ice maker depends on freezer temperature, water supply, and the control board — so a fridge that looks healthy can still be starving it. That’s exactly why we diagnose before quoting.

Still no ice? Let’s get it sorted

If you’ve checked the arm, the filter, the temperature and the bin, and you’re still scooping ice out of a bag from the store — it’s a part, and it needs a technician.

We work on Thermador every day, we stock the usual icemaker parts on the truck, and most of these are done in a single visit. Written estimate before we start. Warranty on the work.
